Alexander Turanski was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1995. His family moved to Penobscot, Maine, when he was 4 years old, and he has lived there ever since.
Alex began his education at a Waldorf-inspired school in Blue Hill, ME, where he learned to integrate the arts with academics and developed a lasting sense of creativity and curiosity. He started balancing stones in Stonington, ME, in the summer of 2018, and quickly turned that passion into a multifaceted practice: live demonstrations and installations, designing his signature Rock Stack Playing Cards and Rock Stack Puzzle Sets, and documenting his practice through film and photography along the Maine coast.
While earning his MFA at the University of Maine, Alex brought his physical balance practice into the Intermedia program, creating conceptual art that explores life’s dichotomies through the lens of rock balancing. His work has been recognized with the ‘Best Set Design’ award for his stonework in the Isle Theatre Company’s production of Do Not Move Stones, which went on to win Best Production of the Year at the 2021 Broadway World Maine Awards.
